Grigoriy Chukhray was a Ukrainian filmmaker, who gained fame outside the Soviet Union for his films The Forty-First, shown at the 1957 Cannes Film Festival, and especially Ballad of a Soldier, which won a special jury prize at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival and prizes for Best Picture and Best Direct...or at the 1960 San Francisco International Film Festival.
